Not grand, but highly practical. This is where tools hum, electrons flash, and bars of steel, sheets of glass, and bags of concrete are transformed.
Sculpture is engineered, even if just choosing which finger to press into the clay. The process of transforming a thumbnail sketch into a three dimensional piece often begins like many other projects, with paper, pencil and a bit of math. We start by researching materials and experimenting with techniques. We calculate load capacities, determine methods and often make full-scale schematics to ensure that the finished piece is not only elegant but is also appropriate for years of use in its intended environment. Each component and element of the composition is considered individually and as part of the whole. The design and fabrication process is anything but linear, and even after we begin building, the design constantly evolves. After all, we make art.
